Mattoon’s Engineering Department assures that the design, construction, and maintenance of the public and private development improvements are in conformance with the City’s Ordinances and standards so that safety and serviceability are maximized and long-term maintenance expense is minimized.
The Department provides timely, cost effective in-house design/inspection services for City public improvement & maintenance projects. The Engineering staff will be involved in the creation and implementation of a capital improvement plan in areas of water systems, sanitary sewer system, sidewalk system, central business district improvements, storm water/drainage systems and street improvements. The staff also supports and provides traffic related data/studies.
In the area of permits, the Engineering Department inspects work on utility improvements, driveways, walks from commercial and residential Street Cut Permits issued by the Building Inspections Department.
