The Mattoon Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency, administered by a Chief of Police and one Deputy Chief of Police, with a budget allowing for 42 sworn police officers and 13 support staff which includes dispatchers, clerks, and secretaries.

Officers patrol 9.8 square miles within the corporate city limits, serving a population of 18,500. The department conducts criminal investigations and sponsors and participates in public functions and public assistance programs throughout the community.

The main purpose of the Mattoon Police Department is to protect and to serve the citizens of Mattoon, maintaining the peace, and providing a safe community environment.
